Jodhpur is 600 km from Delhi via Jaipur and Ajmer, and the first sight of it explains the nickname — Mehrangarh Fort on its 400-foot cliff, and the blue-washed houses of the old town spread beneath it. The fort is the reason most people come, and it deserves a full morning: the museum inside is one of the best kept in Rajasthan, and the ramparts give you the whole city at once. Below it, Jaswant Thada in white marble is quieter, and the Umaid Bhawan Palace, part royal residence and part hotel, holds a vintage car collection. The Sardar Market around the clock tower is where the city actually happens. We usually route through Pushkar or Ajmer on one leg so the drive earns a second stop.
