Leh is roughly 1,000 km from Delhi by the Manali route, and this is the most demanding trip we run. The Manali-Leh highway runs through the Atal Tunnel and over Baralacha La, Nakee La, Lachulung La and Tanglang La, three of them above 16,000 feet, and it is open only from roughly June to September. Altitude is the real constraint rather than distance: Leh sits at 11,500 feet and we build a full acclimatisation day into every itinerary before going higher to Khardung La, Nubra or Pangong. Inner Line Permits are required for Nubra, Pangong and Tso Moriri, and we arrange them. Inside Ladakh the local taxi union does not allow outside taxis for sightseeing, so our car brings you to Leh and takes you home, and the trips around Leh, to Nubra and to Pangong are made in a local Ladakh taxi, paid separately. Vehicles on this route are chosen for the terrain, and we send drivers who have done the passes before — this is not a road to learn on.

Day 1

Delhi → Manali

The first leg: NH-44 to Chandigarh, into the hills at Kiratpur and along the Beas to Manali.

Tip: The Manali–Leh road is open roughly from June to October, depending on snow clearance.

Day 2

Manali → Jispa

Through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul and up the Bhaga valley to Jispa at about 3,300 m — a short day on purpose, to let the body adjust.

  2. 8:00 AM Atal Tunnel A 9.02 km tunnel at about 3,000 m under the Pir Panjal, opening into the stark Lahaul valley.
  3. 8:45 AM Sissu waterfall A tall waterfall above the road beside the Chandra river.
  4. 11:00 AM Keylong and Kardang Monastery The district headquarters of Lahaul, with an old Drukpa monastery on the hillside opposite.
  5. 12:30 PM Lunch at Keylong
  6. 2:30 PM Arrive in Jispa, rest and a gentle walk by the river

Day 3

Jispa → Leh

The great Himalayan crossing: Baralacha La, the Gata Loops, Lachulung La, the Moore Plains and Tanglang La, down to the Indus and Leh.

  2. 6:30 AM Baralacha La, about 4,890 m The pass where the roads to Lahaul, Ladakh and Spiti meet, often lined with snow walls in June.
  3. 8:30 AM Sarchu A tented stop on a high plain at the border of Himachal and Ladakh.
  4. 10:00 AM The Gata Loops and Nakee La Twenty-one hairpin bends climbing to Nakee La at about 4,740 m.

Day 4

Leh acclimatisation and local sights

A slow day in Leh at 3,500 m — essential rest for the body — with short visits to the town's landmarks in the afternoon.

  3. 1:45 PM Local Ladakh taxi for the afternoon's sightseeing The Ladakh taxi union does not allow outside taxis for sightseeing in Ladakh, so this is done in a local Ladakh taxi, paid separately. Our car stays in Leh.
  4. 2:00 PM Shanti Stupa and Leh Palace The white Japanese-built stupa on the hill above town, and the nine-storey 17th-century palace of the Ladakhi kings overlooking the old town.
  5. 3:30 PM Hall of Fame and Gurudwara Pathar Sahib The Army museum of Ladakh's wars and high-altitude life, and the gurudwara where Guru Nanak is said to have meditated.
  6. 4:30 PM Magnetic Hill and the Sangam at Nimmu The stretch of road where cars seem to roll uphill, and the meeting point of the green Indus and the grey Zanskar.
  7. 6:30 PM Back in Leh

Day 5

Leh → Pangong Tso → Leh

Over Chang La to the blue waters of Pangong Tso and back, with Thiksey Monastery on the return.

  2. 8:30 AM Chang La One of the highest motorable passes, at about 5,360 m. Stops at the top are kept short.
  3. 11:30 AM Pangong Tso A 134 km long lake at about 4,250 m, two-thirds of it in Tibet, changing colour from turquoise to deep blue through the day.
  4. 1:00 PM Lunch at Spangmik
  5. 2:00 PM Return over Chang La
  6. 5:30 PM Thiksey Monastery A 12-storey monastery on a hill above the Indus, modelled on the Potala Palace, with a 15 m Maitreya Buddha.

Day 6

Leh → Jispa

Parking charges are payable as per actual. A night charge of ₹400 applies if the vehicle is dropped after 11:00 PM on the final day.

Hotel accommodation, meals, monument and temple entry tickets, activity and adventure-sport tickets, and any local ride such as a helicopter, pony or palki are not part of the package.

Sightseeing and road conditions

Sightseeing is subject to the opening days and hours of each monument. We are not responsible if a monument, temple or park is closed on the day of your visit.

In some places the local taxi union does not allow outside vehicles for local sightseeing — in Ladakh, and for Rohtang Pass in Manali. There, the local sightseeing is done in a local taxi, paid separately.

Journey times may be affected by traffic, police or administrative restrictions, VIP movement, processions, strikes or road works, and we are not responsible for delays or itinerary changes caused by them.

In the event of a landslide, flood, heavy snowfall, earthquake or any other natural occurrence that closes a road or a monument, we are not responsible for the resulting delay, detour or cancellation. Any additional running or halt on that account is charged as per actual.

Fares hold for the dates and itinerary quoted, and are revised if the dates, itinerary or vehicle change. Any revision in toll or state tax by the authorities applies as per actual.
