Mathura and Vrindavan sit 150 km down the Yamuna Expressway, close enough to do in a single day and rich enough to hold you for three. Mathura is Krishna's birthplace, and the Janmabhoomi temple complex is the anchor; Vrindavan, 12 km on, is where he is said to have grown up, and it is a town of temples — Banke Bihari with its curtained darshan, the marble scale of Prem Mandir lit up after dark, ISKCON, and the older Radha Raman and Nidhivan. Timing matters more here than anywhere else we drive: Banke Bihari shuts between the morning and evening darshan windows, and the lanes around it are closed to cars. Our drivers know the parking points and the walking routes from them.

Day 1

Delhi → Mathura

The Krishna temples of Mathura and the evening aarti on the Yamuna.

  1. 7:00 AM Pickup from your home or hotel in Delhi NCR
  2. 8:30 AM Breakfast on the way
  3. 10:30 AM Krishna Janmabhoomi The temple complex built over the site revered as Krishna's birthplace, with the prison-cell shrine and the Keshav Dev temple. Security is strict: phones, cameras and bags are deposited at the lockers.
  4. 12:30 PM Hotel check-in at Mathura and lunch
  5. 4:30 PM Dwarkadhish Temple A 19th-century temple near the river with painted ceilings. Morning darshan ends at about 10:30 AM, and the temple reopens in the late afternoon.
  6. 6:30 PM Vishram Ghat aarti The main ghat on the Yamuna in Mathura, where Krishna is said to have rested after defeating Kansa. The evening aarti with floating lamps is the best time to be here.

Day 2

Mathura → Govardhan → Vrindavan

Govardhan Hill and its sacred ponds in the morning, then Vrindavan for the evening.

  2. 8:30 AM Govardhan Hill and Daan Ghati The hill Krishna is said to have lifted on his finger. Pilgrims walk the 21 km parikrama around it; the car covers the main stops.
  3. 10:00 AM Kusum Sarovar An 18th-century sandstone memorial with a stepped tank, one of the most photographed spots on the Govardhan parikrama.
  4. 11:00 AM Radha Kund and Shyam Kund Two sacred ponds side by side, among the holiest places in Braj.
  5. 1:00 PM Lunch and check-in at Vrindavan
  6. 5:00 PM Banke Bihari Temple Vrindavan's most visited temple. The curtain in front of the deity is drawn every few minutes. Open in morning and evening sessions and closed in the afternoon.
  7. 7:30 PM Prem Mandir after dark A white Italian-marble temple opened in 2012, with carved scenes of Krishna's life. After dark it is lit in changing colours and there is a musical fountain.

Tip: Govardhan is busiest on Ekadashi and full-moon days, when the parikrama road is crowded.

Day 3

Vrindavan → Barsana → Delhi

  1. 4:30 AM Mangala aarti at ISKCON The Krishna Balaram Mandir, known for its kirtan. The mangala aarti is at 4:30 AM.

  3. 8:30 AM Radha Raman Temple and Nidhivan One of the seven principal temples of Vrindavan, founded in 1542 around an image of Krishna believed to have appeared by itself.
  4. 10:00 AM Drive to Barsana, about 45 km
  5. 11:00 AM Radha Rani Temple, Barsana The temple of Radha on Bhanugarh hill, reached by about 200 steps, with views over the Braj countryside. It closes around midday and reopens at about 5 PM.
  6. 12:30 PM Lunch at Barsana
  7. 1:30 PM Depart for Delhi

Tip: The Barsana steps are steep; older travellers can ask about the ropeway where it is running.

Sightseeing and road conditions

Sightseeing is subject to the opening days and hours of each monument. We are not responsible if a monument, temple or park is closed on the day of your visit.

In some places the local taxi union does not allow outside vehicles for local sightseeing — in Ladakh, and for Rohtang Pass in Manali. There, the local sightseeing is done in a local taxi, paid separately.

Journey times may be affected by traffic, police or administrative restrictions, VIP movement, processions, strikes or road works, and we are not responsible for delays or itinerary changes caused by them.

In the event of a landslide, flood, heavy snowfall, earthquake or any other natural occurrence that closes a road or a monument, we are not responsible for the resulting delay, detour or cancellation. Any additional running or halt on that account is charged as per actual.
