The Rann of Kutch is 1,200 km from Delhi, and the drive south through Rajasthan and into Gujarat is a two-day proposition in each direction, with a night halt at Udaipur on the way down and again on the way back. What you come for is the White Rann at Dhordo — a salt desert that stretches flat to the horizon and turns silver under a full moon. The season runs from November to February, and the Rann Utsav tent city operates through it; outside those months the salt flats are underwater and the drive is not worth making. Bhuj is the base for everything else: the Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal in the old town, and the craft villages at Nirona and Bhujodi where Rogan painting and Ajrakh block printing still happen.
The long first leg south-west on NH-48, past Jaipur and Ajmer, to Udaipur, the halfway point to Kutch.
